How To Hide Drives On Windows 7, 8, 10 PC – ( 3 Ways)

We all have Windows PC or Laptop at our home which we use for different types of purpose. These purposes are not the main thing about which we are going to talk about. But, it is related to our main objective of this article. One of the functions which PC performs is storing data. For that, there are different drives with a name like C or D drive generally. Sometimes, there is some personal or confidential data which store in these drives. And, we never want this data to be accessed by anyone. To prevent that, you can simply hide drives. So, today we are going to tell you how you can hide drives on windows.

There is a very less possibility that our laptop or PC is not used by any other person. And, if someone is using our device then we always remain in constant anxiety. That, what if that person checks our personal data or anything confidential. This is always our worry. But, we assure you that you will be released from any type of worry after you have read this.

Most of the people don’t know that you can truly hide drives on your PC. So that always keep hiding their folders. But, not every time, there is a single file to hide. And, you don’t want to create a mess by keeping all files in one folder. That’s where you will need to hide a whole drive or partition instead of a single folder. How To Hide Drives on Windows.

Hiding drives is a quite difficult task. But, you don’t have to worry. Because it won’t be difficult anymore with this proper guide. As we have researched and found out several working ways through which you can hide drives within just a few minutes.

Once you have hidden the drives in your PC then you would need to unhide them. We have also explained how to unhide the drives too. So, you don’t have any problem when you want to access your data. There are three methods used to hide drives. Step to Step elaboration method is given of all three methods.

Method 1: Hide Drive Using Disk Management.

We will be using the disk management function of drives in the first method. In this method, we will have the administrator-level access to My Computer. By gaining that access, you will be able to hide any drive on your device. Here are the complete steps to perform this method:

Step 1. Firstly, you have to “Right-Click” on the MyComputer icon.

Step 2. You will see a number of options in the dialog box. Select the “Manage” option.

Step 3. A new window will be opened on your screen. Here, you need to click on the “Storage” option.

Step 4.  After that, select the “Disk Management” option. When you click on it, you will see all the drives which are on your computer.

Step 5. Now, you can select the drive which you want to hide. We will be hiding “D” drive that’s why we have selected it. Then, you just have to right-click on the drive.

Step 6. A dialog box will appear. Select the “Change Drive Letter and Paths…” option from it.

Step 7. You will see a pop-up window on your screen. Just click on the “Remove” button from that window. Then, again click on “Yes”.

In this way, you will be able to hide the particular drive from appearing on your device. When you want to access the hidden drive then you need to unhide it. Method to unhide the drive is given below:

Unhiding Method: To unhide the drive, you need to follow the same process until Step 6. Then, you can simply click on the “Add” button. It will ask you what name you want to give to the drive. After selecting it, just click on the “Ok” button. And, the drive will appear in the device.

Method 2: Hide Local Disk Drive through Command Prompt.

We personally feel that this is the easiest method out of all three. The only condition is that you don’t hate using command prompt like old times. In this method, we will run some commands to hide drives from explorer. Just follow the steps given below.

Step 1. You must know what is the first step, Opening Command Prompt.

Step 2. Type “Diskpart” command in it and press the “Enter” button. Then, it will open a new window of CMD.

Step 3. In the new window, you have to type “List Volume”. Then, press “Enter”. It will open the list of drives in your device.

Step 4. You will see that a number will be assigned to each of the drives. So, you have to type “select volume” then space and the number of particular drive which you want to hide. For reference, we are hiding D drive. So, we will enter “select volume 3”. Then, hit enter.

Step 5. Now, you simply type “Remove Letter D”. You can write the name of the drive within your device instead of D. Then, just press the enter button.

Step 6. The particular drive will be hidden successfully. And, you will see the following screen with the same message.

So, you can go now to “My Computer. And, see that the drive is not appearing in it. We know that you need to know the unhiding method to access it again. Here, it is.

Unhiding Method: To unhide the drive which is hidden using the command prompt. You just have to follow the same procedure until step 4. Then, simply type “Assign Letter D” in cmd and press enter. You will be able to access the drive then.

Method 3: Hide Particular Drive in Windows by Group Policy.

It’s the third and the last method to hide drives on windows. You will have to just enter a command on “Run” software in your PC. Hiding the drive will be done by using the Local Group Policy Editor. It can be done only by running a command. Here is a step to step details.

Step 1. Press “win + r” from your keyboard. It will open Run software on your screen.

Step 2. Then, just type “gpedit.msc” in the text field of Run software. Click the Enter button.

Step 3. Now, Local Group Policy Editor will be opened on your screen. You just have to navigate to:

User Configuration>Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Windows Explorer

Step 4. A similar screen like below will open on your device. You just have to double click on the “Hide These Specified Drives in My Computer” option.

Step 5. A new pop-up window will be opened. You firstly have to enable this option.

Step 6. Then, you can select the particular drive from the drop-down menu of “Restrict all drives”. Simply click on the “Apply” button.

In this way, the particular drive which you have selected will disappear from my computer. It is a slightly complicated method but still one of the working methods to hide the drive. You can unhide the drive by using the method below.

Unhiding Method: To access back again the hidden drive, you just have to follow the same procedure until step 5. Then, select the “Not Configured” option and click on “Apply. The hidden drive will not be hidden anymore.
